eXtra Back to School 2026: From Human Insight to AI & 3D Campaign

الفزعة قبل الرجعة | Ready Before The Bell

How we brought a familiar family moment to life through creative direction, AI filmmaking, and 3D production.

By Ahmed Ramlawy | Creative Director

It Started With a Familiar Problem

There’s a particular kind of chaos that happens the night before school starts.

Everything seems ready. The school bags are packed. The uniforms are waiting. The family is preparing for an early morning.

Then someone remembers an assignment that still needs printing.

The printer stops working. The laptop freezes. The tablet has barely any battery left.

Suddenly, a perfectly normal evening becomes a family emergency.

It’s a small moment, but it’s something many parents recognize. And that was the starting point for our Back to School 2026 campaign for eXtra Saudi Arabia.

We weren’t looking for another way to show laptops, tablets, and printers. We wanted to tell a story about why people need them in the first place.

Finding the Human Insight

Back-to-School is one of the most competitive retail seasons. Most campaigns revolve around familiar messages: new technology, attractive offers, and everything students need. All of that matters.

But I wanted to find an emotional connection that could bring all those products together under one meaningful idea.

So we started with the pressure families experience when they’re trying to get everything ready. Those last-minute problems that always seem to happen at the worst possible time. And the sense of relief when someone steps in to help.

That’s where the concept began to take shape. Rather than positioning eXtra simply as a place to buy electronics, we wanted to show it as the brand that helps families feel ready.

The Idea: الفزعة قبل الرجعة

One of my priorities was making sure the campaign felt authentically Saudi. Not just visually, but in its tone, language, and emotional logic.

The word الفزعة carries a familiar cultural meaning: someone stepping in to help when needed. Connecting that idea to the return to school gave us the Arabic campaign line: الفزعة قبل الرجعة.

For English communication, we developed: Ready Before The Bell.

They aren’t literal translations, and that was intentional. Both lines communicate the same promise in ways that feel natural to their audiences. That gave the campaign a central idea strong enough to connect emotional storytelling with everyday retail communication.

Bringing the Story to Life With AI

The centerpiece of the campaign was a 40-second AI-produced hero film. The story follows a family trying to prepare for the first day of school. A series of unexpected technology problems turns an ordinary evening into a stressful situation.

Our direction was to make those moments feel recognizable rather than exaggerated simply for visual spectacle. The emotional journey mattered most. We wanted to move from tension and uncertainty to reassurance and relief.

That progression influenced the lighting, atmosphere, performances, pacing, and overall visual language.

AI allowed us to explore the production creatively. But generating beautiful frames wasn’t the objective.

The real challenge was making every shot belong to the same story: keeping characters consistent, maintaining continuity across locations and wardrobe, directing believable reactions, and ensuring the visuals served the idea rather than distracting from it.

AI was part of the production. Creative direction was what kept the story together.

Expanding the Idea Into 3D and Lifestyle Content

The hero film was only one part of the campaign. We expanded the idea into a broader creative system that included a standalone 3D film, four lifestyle videos, key visuals, and multiple supporting campaign assets.

The 3D production gave us a different opportunity. While the hero film focused on the family’s experience, the 3D execution allowed us to explore a more playful, product-led visual world.

The lifestyle videos extended the family storytelling through shorter moments. Each execution had its own role. The challenge was to make them feel connected without repeating the exact same creative treatment.

Because a campaign doesn’t need every asset to look identical. It needs every asset to communicate the same underlying idea.

Designing for a Real Retail Environment

One of the biggest differences between creating a beautiful campaign presentation and delivering a complete retail campaign is what happens after the main concept is approved.

The work has to function across actual business requirements: product categories, promotional offers, installment messages, social media, digital advertising, print, and in-store screens. And everything needed to work in Arabic and English.

We developed the visual system to accommodate those needs while maintaining the campaign’s identity. That meant balancing storytelling with commercial communication.

A campaign film could establish the emotional connection. A key visual could communicate an offer. A retail adaptation could deliver information quickly. Different executions, one consistent creative direction.

The People Behind the Campaign

My role covered the creative direction, campaign concept, taglines, and AI concept development. But bringing the campaign to life required a team with different creative and production skills.

  • Creative Direction & Concept: Ahmed Ramlawy
  • Key Visuals & 3D Art: Islam Abdel Dayem
  • 3D Animation: Karim Mousa
  • Key Visual Development: Sara Albuwait and Omar Tarek
  • Adaptations: Omar Tarek, Islam Abdel Dayem, Rahaf, and Sara Albuwait
  • Arabic Script: Lamees Alrowili
  • English Script: Toufic Samih
  • Marketing Leadership: Amr Ibrahim and Mohamed Hussien

Every person contributed to translating the concept into a consistent campaign across different formats. And that’s an important part of creative production that doesn’t always appear in the final visuals.

What This Project Taught Me

Looking back at the campaign, the most valuable part wasn’t the number of videos or visuals we created. It was watching one human insight evolve into different forms of communication: a family story, an AI-produced film, a standalone 3D execution, lifestyle content, key visuals, and retail adaptations.

All connected to the same idea. AI opened new possibilities for execution, but the technology alone wasn’t what made the campaign coherent.

The starting point was understanding a familiar human situation and finding a credible role for the brand within it. That’s the approach I believe in.

The idea comes before the image. And for Back to School 2026, that idea was simple: الفزعة قبل الرجعة.
