How to Run Your Own AI Assistant Locally — Without a Monthly Subscription

What Does Running AI Locally Actually Mean?

Imagine opening an AI chatbot on your laptop, disconnecting from Wi-Fi, and continuing the conversation. No monthly subscription. No cloud inference bill. Your prompts and documents stay on your computer. For many everyday tasks, that’s possible.

You can download a language model, run it locally, and interact with it through a familiar chat interface. Running AI locally doesn’t mean you’re running ChatGPT or Claude themselves. It means using a different model that can be downloaded and executed on your hardware. The interface may feel familiar, but capabilities and limitations differ.

Cloud-based assistants normally process requests on remote servers. With a local model, its files are on your computer and the calculations use your CPU, GPU and memory. Once the required software and models are downloaded, many text workflows run offline. You gain control over where information is processed, but must manage installation, storage, and hardware limits.

Free Doesn’t Mean Zero Cost

Some local models can be used without subscriptions or per-message inference charges. You still need a compatible computer, electricity, storage, and an internet connection for initial downloads. Larger models can demand expensive hardware. Also, downloadable models aren’t always open-source: some are open-weight with license restrictions. Read the model license before commercial use.

Option One: LM Studio — The Simplest Starting Point

For people who want local AI without coding, LM Studio provides a desktop chat interface.

1. Install LM Studio

Download the version for your operating system and check the official requirements. Compatible Apple Silicon Macs support local execution with runtimes including MLX and llama.cpp.

2. Download a suitable model

Open model discovery and select a small instruct or chat model that fits your hardware. You may find families such as Qwen and Gemma. Don’t assume the largest model is best; begin with a smaller option.

3. Load it into memory

Choose the downloaded model in the chat interface. If there’s insufficient memory, select a smaller or more compressed model, or reduce context length.

4. Test it on real work

Try: “Help me create a five-step production checklist for a social media advertising campaign.” Then ask: “Review this creative brief, identify missing information, and suggest questions before production.” Check accuracy, language and consistency, not just response speed.

5. Disconnect the internet

Once the runtime and model are installed, disconnect Wi-Fi and open a fresh conversation. Local inference should continue. Model discovery and downloads still need a connection.

Option Two: Ollama — More Control

Ollama runs downloadable models locally and is useful when integrating AI with other software. After installation, an example command is:

ollama run gemma3:4b

The model is downloaded on first use and run locally thereafter. Ollama also provides a local API that other applications can access, with appropriate configuration.

Want a Browser Interface? Open WebUI

Open WebUI is a self-hosted chat interface compatible with Ollama and other backends. You can install it using supported approaches including Docker. It introduces extra configuration, so first confirm that a local model works before adding another interface.

Which Setup Should You Choose?

Your goal Practical starting point
Chat without coding LM Studio
Work with local documents LM Studio
Use a local AI API Ollama or LM Studio local server
Browser-based AI workspace Open WebUI + Ollama

How Powerful Does Your Computer Need to Be?

Small quantized models may be usable on consumer laptops; larger models can require far more memory. Quantization, context length, architecture and runtime all matter. With 16 GB RAM, start with smaller models rather than very large ones. Check estimated requirements and test your tasks before buying hardware.

What Can Local AI Do?

Draft and reorganize text, summarize documents, brainstorm creative directions, prepare checklists, assist with code and organize notes. Quality varies significantly by model, language, task and context. Small models may struggle with complex reasoning or extended multilingual work. Local execution does not automatically grant the model access to files or control of applications.

Is Local AI Really Private?

Keeping inference local can improve privacy, but local doesn’t mean automatically secure. Review storage, plugins, network settings and cloud-connected features. Keep local services bound to localhost unless remote access is intentionally configured and protected.

Local AI Versus ChatGPT and Claude

Cloud assistants may offer stronger frontier models and integrated research or media tools. Local setups offer control, offline availability and predictable inference use without per-request cloud charges. Many professionals will benefit from both approaches.

Start With One Real Task

Choose a repeated task such as reviewing a creative brief for missing information and producing a checklist. Test it locally, check what the model gets right and wrong, then decide whether it belongs in your workflow.

The goal isn’t to own the biggest model. It’s to have an AI system that solves a problem reliably, on terms that make sense for you.
